Building Stronger St. Louis, Block by Block

Since 1978, SLACO has united neighborhoods across St. Louis with programs, advocacy, and community leadership.

About Us

On Plymouth Avenue in the Walnut Park neighborhood, SLACO has been doing the quiet, essential work that holds communities together for over four decades. Founded in 1978 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the St. Louis Association of Community Organizations was built on a simple conviction: that the people who live in a neighborhood are its greatest resource, and that real change starts when those people organize together.

What sets SLACO apart isn't a flashy program or a big budget. It's the consistency. Generation after generation of St. Louis families have walked through these doors on Plymouth Ave looking for support, and generation after generation have found it. From children getting homework help after school to residents showing up to advocate for their block, this office has been the connective tissue of northwest St. Louis for decades.

SLACO's work is shaped by the belief that safer, more connected communities don't happen by accident. They happen because someone organizes, someone shows up, someone leads. Through initiatives like Neighborhoods United for Change, SLACO gives residents the tools and the platform to do exactly that.

What We Offer

SLACO's programs are designed to meet St. Louis families where they are, from the youngest students to the most seasoned neighborhood advocates. After-school programs give children a structured, supportive environment to learn and grow when the school day ends, and summer camps extend that opportunity through the warmer months when kids need engaging activities most.

Beyond youth programming, SLACO is deeply invested in the civic health of St. Louis neighborhoods. Neighborhood advocacy and organizing puts residents at the center of decisions that affect their streets, their schools, and their safety. The Neighborhoods United for Change initiative is a direct expression of that mission, bringing neighbors together around shared goals and giving community voices the amplification they deserve. Community leadership support rounds out the offering, ensuring that the people who step up to lead their blocks have guidance, resources, and a network behind them.

Why Choose Us

Rooted in St. Louis since 1978, with over 45 years of real neighborhood-level impact across the city.
Youth programs keep children engaged and supported from after school through summer, right in their own community.
The Neighborhoods United for Change initiative gives residents a structured way to advocate for real local improvements.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, SLACO's mission is people, not profit, every program reflects that priority.
Community leadership support means SLACO doesn't just help neighborhoods, it grows the leaders within them.
Rated 4.3 out of 5 by community members who recognize the genuine difference this organization makes.

"It's not a lot of workers, so the wait time can be long. There's always someone new in the office waiting on you everytime you go in there. Sometimes they getting you together and getting you out of there. Sometimes they messed up something and you have to go fuss and work it out. For the most part the people are friendly and do their best to accommodate everyone"
